05/05/18 SWPL Launceston 7-0 Plymouth Argyle Reserves

Launceston made it 15 goals and nine points inside four excellent days when they overwhelmed Plymouth Argyle’s SWPL side at Pennygillam on Saturday.

Having beaten Godolphin 6-1 on Tuesday and followed up with an impressive 2-0 win at Ivybridge two days later, the Clarets proved far too strong for a young Argyle team, eventually triumphing 7-0.

Despite some unavailability Mark was again able to name a strong starting eleven, with just two changes from the side that played so well at Ivybridge. Jordan Walton and Liam Tilley came back in, at the expense of Scott Blatchford and Callum Thompson.

As early as the warm-up, there were suspicions of a physical mis-match, with Lee Rundle in particular towering over his Argyle counterparts.

And sure enough, the floodgates opened once Ruben Kane had put Launceston in front in the 5th minute. Chris Head set up Kane to double the lead four minutes later and Sam Davey soon made it three, apparently getting the faintest of touches to nudge Head’s corner past Argyle keeper Max Childs.

The next goal took another 20 minutes to arrive but was worth the wait as top scorer Davey seized on Reece Thomson’s clever header to blast a 20-yard drive past the helpless Childs.

Ruben completed his hat-trick after 52 minutes, having been cleverly set up by Sam Watts and although Argyle kept the Clarets at bay for a while, it remained one-way traffic.

The outstanding Dan Metherell made it six with a powerful header from yet another Chris Head corner, before Davey completed his hat-trick in injury time, diverting home a wayward Liam Tilley effort.

Mark was able to rest some tired legs, repeating Thursday’s substitutions by introducing Louis Irwin and Rhys Loosemore, on this occasion for Sam Watts and Jordan Walton. Goalkeeping substitute Tom Watson was also given some valuable and well deserved game time, replacing Josh for the final 20 minutes.

Argyle fought bravely, in particular the talented 16-year-old Rio Garside, but were ultimately outplayed by an impressive Launceston team, determined to finish the season in style.

You can only beat whatever opposition is presented and the Clarets were ruthless and professional. In handing Argyle their biggest defeat of the season, the team have given themselves a realistic chance of finishing above Argyle in 7th place, should they take four points from their final two games, against Newquay and Torpoint.
